Sheriff voices support in op-ed published in the Tallahassee Democrat
(Tallahassee, FL) – Smart & Safe Florida received a key endorsement today, as Gadsden County Sheriff Morris A. Young endorsed a YES vote on Amendment 3 on the November ballot. Having served more than 20 years in Florida law enforcement, Sheriff Young believes that legalizing adult use recreational marijuana is the best path forward to making a safer Florida for all.
After a mass fentanyl overdose shook Gadsden County in 2022 when the drug was laced in other substances, Sheriff Young knows firsthand the dangers of the illicit market and the importance of access to safe, tested marijuana for adults.
“When Amendment 3 passes, adults who choose to consume marijuana will be safer as a result because simple cannabis products, legally purchased won’t contain those dangerous additives,” Sheriff Young wrote in his column. “My deputies won’t have to spend our limited resources on arresting or otherwise prosecuting adults for simply possessing or consuming small amounts of marijuana. This will allow us to focus on preventing serious violent crimes or crimes involving deadly drugs like cocaine, fentanyl and meth.”

“We are honored to have Sheriff Young’s support, a significant endorsement that passing Amendment 3 is the safest path forward for Florida,” said Morgan Hill, spokesperson for Smart & Safe Florida. “Sheriff Young is right: Passing Amendment 3 will not only alleviate the burden Florida police feel on a daily basis, allowing more time to focus on dangerous crime, but Amendment 3 will also provide more tax revenue and support for the health and safety of all Floridians.”
