Florida Alliance for Retired Americans Endorses Amendment 3
Senior citizen nonprofit supports the legalization of recreational adult use marijuana in Florida
(Wellington, FL) – Today, the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans (FLARA) endorsed a YES vote on Amendment 3 on the November ballot, throwing its support behind legalizing recreational adult use marijuana in the state of Florida and increasing access to safe, regulated products for all adult Floridians.
FLARA, a nonprofit which works to pursue and promote legislation that is in the best interest of current and future retired Floridians, represents a significant portion of the state’s senior citizens with over 200,000 active members. FLARA is passionate about championing issues that stand to safeguard the health and wellbeing of retired Floridians, including the legalization of recreational adult use marijuana.
A recent study found that 21% of respondents over the age of 50 said they consumed cannabis, with over 60% of consumers acknowledging the use it to relax, help with sleep or relieve pain. Another study in June found that older patients using marijuana products experienced considerable improvements in health and well-being. Additionally, a study released in March showed that marijuana use is associated with “significantly” lower odds of subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and that people who consume cannabis for recreational or medical purposes report less confusion and memory loss compared to non-users.
“The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans is proud to support Amendment 3 with unanimous support by our voting members,” said Felicia Bruce, President of FLARA. “Marijuana can be incredibly beneficial for retired Floridians to improve sleep, reduce pain or ease anxiety without the harmful side effects of many prescription drugs. Senior citizens deserve the freedom to enjoy safe and tested marijuana products in Florida as over half the country can in 24 states and D.C.”
“We are honored to have the support of the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans, an important voice for how the legalization of regulated adult use marijuana can benefit Floridians of all ages,” said Morgan Hill, spokesperson for Smart & Safe Florida. “We believe that Amendment 3 will offer greater freedom for senior citizens to enjoy the benefits of safe and tested marijuana, including the reduced risk of cognitive decline and pain relief.”
